Historical note

The Iowa State Dairy Association was originally established as the Northeastern Iowa Dairymen's Association in 1877. In 1891, the Association was reorganized and renamed the Iowa State Dairy Association (ISDA). The original purpose of the ISDA was "to promote the dairy interests within the state of Iowa and everything pertaining thereto and connected therewith."

In 1909, a dairy cattle show was held in conjunction with the ISDA annual convention. The cattle show attracted a great deal of interest, and the ISDA decided to continue it as an annual program, known as the Dairy Cattle Congress. The Dairy Cattle Congress was very successful and grew so quickly that by 1913 it was incorporated as an independent organization. The ISDA annual convention was held in conjunction with the Dairy Cattle Congress through 1913, but it was found that the many activities available detracted from attendance at the convention. As a result the convention was later held in conjunction with Iowa State's Farm and Home Week, held each year in January or February in Ames, Iowa.

The Iowa Dairy Industry Commission (IDIC) was established by the Legislature in 1939 at the request of the ISDA. The Commission was to be made up of dairy producer representatives from each Iowa Congressional District. The Commissioners were selected from a list of nominees submitted by the Board of Directors of the ISDA. The purpose of the IDIC was to promote the use of dairy products through advertising, publicity, sales promotion, research, and education. The 1939 law called for financing by an excise tax of one cent per pound of butterfat purchased by the first buyer of milk or cream from Iowa producers the first fifteen days of May each year. The law was reenacted in 1941, setting the period of June 1 to June 15 for collection of the tax. The time period was later extended to the full months of May and June.

In 1953, the Iowa State Dairy Association formed a committee to study the possibility of having a year-round voluntary butterfat excise tax set-aside in Iowa. The money raised was to be used for increased promotion of dairy products. The committee advised that the Association "adopt a voluntary set-aside program of one-half cent per pound butterfat sold or two cents per hundred pounds of milk sold, for ten months of the year, and continuing the sixty-day one-cent per pound butterfat set-aside legal basis under which we now operate." Meetings were held throughout the state to explain the new set-aside program and enroll dairy plants. A new organization, the Iowa Dairy Promotion Association (IDPA), was established to manage the set-aside program. Funds raised were used both locally and nationally for the promotion of dairy products.

In 1957 the IDPA and the IDIC were placed under one management. The name of the IDPA was changed to the American Dairy Association of Iowa (ADA of Iowa) in 1959.

In 1972, the Midland United Dairy Industry Association (predecessor to the Midwest Dairy Association) was formed as a regional advertising and promotion organization. This Association, as a member of the United Dairy Industry Association, helped to sponsor the promotional efforts of the American Dairy Association nationwide. Most of the former functions of the Iowa State Dairy Association were transferred the Midland UDIA.

Collection description

This collection (1939-1979, undated) contains annual reports, correspondence, financial statements, meeting minutes, and promotional materials from the ISDA as well as from its affiliated organizations (Iowa Dairy Industry Commission (IDIC), Iowa Dairy Promotion Association (IDPA), American Dairy Association of Iowa (ADA of Iowa), and the Dairy Cattle Congress).

In addition to the records of the Iowa State Dairy Association and its affiliates, the collection has a second series of records relating to the American Dairy Association which includes annual reports, financial statements, proceedings of annual meetings, and photographs and press releases from national advertising campaigns.
