Historical note

The first celebration of National Agriculture Day (also known as Ag Day), took place on March 26, 1973 with David S. Bennett of Miller Publishing Company as the Chairperson. The purpose of Agriculture Day is to increase public awareness of American agriculture and the role that agricultural producers play in producing and delivering food to the American public, in addition to celebrating and recognizing the many contributions agriculture makes.

Once celebrated as a single day, there is now (2009) a National Agriculture Day (more commonly referred to as just Ag Day), celebrated on or around the first day of spring, within an entire National Agriculture Week. The Agriculture Council of America (ACA) (formed in 1973), managed by leaders in the agriculture, food and fiber communities, conducts Ag Day at the national level and has done so since 1981. Chapters, usually at the state or regional level, help conduct and coordinate the local and state activities related to Ag Day. A variety of activities take place for the celebration of Ag Day, including farm tours, seminars, media and educational events, poster displays, distribution of promotional and informational publications, presentations at schools and universities, and public talks. Early in its history, Ag Day operated with the sponsorship of the National Agri-Marketing Association (NAMA), but it now has a variety of sponsors each year.

Originally the day was proposed as a national holiday, and this effort was headed by the Miller Publishing Company of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Miller Publishing Company published agricultural related journals and at the time was the nation's leading publisher of agricultural management business information. The company established Agriculture Day in 1972, and March 26, 1973 was the first day of its celebration by the company by designating Ag Day as a holiday for its employees. Miller encouraged other companies and organizations to participate and campaign for recognition of National Agriculture Day as a national holiday. In October, 1972 Miller Publishing Company turned over the organization of Agriculture Day to the National Agricultural Advertising & Marketing Association (later the National Agri-Marketing Association). Although the company continued to participate in the planning and organization of the day, the company recognized that as a commercial publishing company, gaining the support of other publishers and companies would be difficult.

The first of several proposals for a national holiday was submitted in August, 1972 by Representative William Scherle of Iowa to the House of Representatives (H. J. RES. 1280). Even though it was never named a national holiday, by 1975 Agriculture Day came to be celebrated annually with a national celebration in Washington D.C. and in communities across the nation.

Collection description

The collection (1971-1983, n.d.) contains records documenting the first ten years of Ag Day (1973-1983) and includes correspondence, memoranda, meeting agendas and minutes, resolutions, news releases, news clippings, promotional materials (annual logos, brochures, advertisements, kits), newsletters, lesson plans and education kits, fact sheets, national and chapter reports, photographs, awards, audiotapes and films. The audiotapes and films include radio commercials, a school presentation, state/chapter activities, promotional spots on television, National Agri-Marketing Association's promotions and a film on Agriculture Day, and several Today Show segments.

The collection documents the various goals of Ag Day, including education about and the promotion of American agriculture. Educational materials about agriculture for both children and adults can be found throughout the collection, including lesson plans, workbooks, coloring books, fact sheets, news releases and news clippings. The news releases and news clippings often contain information and facts about agriculture and its current state at that time, in addition to information about Ag Day events and activities. The correspondence, both between individuals and to different groups such as committees and Ag Day participants, covers a variety of topics and concerns including planning issues, decisions, opinions, promotional efforts, and attempts to get national figures such as celebrities involved in Ag Day. Much of the collection contains promotional materials including kits, posters, logos, brochures, pamphlets and correspondence regarding the promotional efforts. John Wayne, an Iowa native, was Chairman for the 1977 Ag Day, and there are a significant number of records in the collection for this Ag Day.

Included in the collection are a few files (a campaign plan, correspondence, and publicity materials) documenting the formation, planning and promotion of the first Ag Day. All Ag Days, from 1973-1983 (except for the 1980 Ag Day), are included within the collection.
