Historical note

The Iowa Poultry Association (IPA), formed in 1929, initially served two basic functions, both of which continue today (2010). One is the National Poultry Improvement Plan, which is a national cooperative Federal-State-Industry program developed for controlling certain poultry diseases. The National Poultry Improvement Plan is a prescribed program of disease control and the monitoring of breeder flocks of chickens, turkeys, and waterfowl. NPIP identifies states,flocks and hatcheries which meet the NPIP standards.

The second function the IPA covered was to serve as a trade association for the poultry industry in Iowa. This aspect involves promotion, legislation, education, insurance, and public relations. Currently, the Iowa Poultry Association oversees Iowa's involvement in the NPIP, regulates the importation and exportation of birds, issues permits for breeder flocks and administers laws and rules regarding poultry in Iowa.

 

Collection description

This collection (1940-1974, n.d.) contains president/officer election material, photographs of past presidents, bulletins, expenses and budget records, member information, hatchery divisions, and various pamphlets, newspaper clippings, and informational booklets.

Much of the informational material comes in the form of reports, pamphlets, booklets, and correspondence. This material focuses on blood typing, breeding, various diseases in poultry, and poultry/turkey management, marketing, production, and tests. The collection also contains the results of egg laying tests (1962-1973) administered by the Poultry Improvement Commission and tested in various states and countries. The tests were used to find ways to improve poultry production. Information about the Egg Advisory Committee, the Egg Booster Club, Egg Day, Egg Industry Week, and about egg quality/ marketing are also included.

Other material in the collection includes the Iowa State Fair chicken barbecue and related correspondence, information from the Eighth and Twelfth Annual North Central Poultry Disease Conference, the National Plans Conference, and the Iowa Multiple Unit Poultry Test (an on-the-farm random sample egg laying test sponsored by the Iowa Poultry Improvement Supervisory Board).

In addition to IPA material, the collection also contains information from the following organizations: the American Poultry and Hatchery Federation, the Iowa Poultry Improvement Association, the National Poultry Improvement Plan, and the National Turkey Improvement Plan.
