Abstract
Rotary International was established in 1905 as a service club whose members are dedicated to volunteering their time, talent, and money to aid in combating hunger, improving health and sanitation, providing education, and promoting goodwill in their local communities and around the world. The Ames Rotary Club, also known as the Ames Noon Rotary Club, was chartered on March 1, 1921, as the 836th Rotary Club. Local organizations supported by the club include the Octagon Center for the Arts, Mary Greeley Medical Center, the Ames Fire Department, the Ames Senior Citizens Center, Carr Pool in Ames, Iowa Games, and the Special Olympics Iowa. The collection contains biographical information on members, bulletins and newsletters, financial reports, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, publications, scrapbooks, and materials documenting the origins of the Ames Rotary Club. Early records of the club include attendance reports, bulletins, correspondence, general meeting and Board of Directors meeting minutes, and two additional files related to the establishment and general history of the club. |
Historical note
Rotary International was established in 1905 as a service club whose members are dedicated to volunteering their time, talent, and money to aid in combating hunger, improving health and sanitation, providing education, and promoting goodwill in their local communities and around the world. The Ames Rotary Club, also known as the Ames Noon Rotary Club, was chartered on March 1, 1921, as the 836th Rotary Club. The Ames Rotary Club has always been active in community affairs. Some of local organizations that the club has supported over the years include the Octagon Center for the Arts, Mary Greeley Medical Center, the Ames Fire Department, the Ames Senior Citizens Center, and Carr Pool in Ames. The Ames Rotary Club and its members are also active supporters of the Iowa Games through cash donations and volunteers and the club also holds annual fundraising events for Special Olympics Iowa. Over the years, members of the Ames Rotary Club have hosted and housed hundreds of international visitors through the Rotary Scholarship Program and the Group Study Exchange Program. Many of these students and exchange study teams come to Ames and Iowa State University to see and learn about new advances in technology. |
Collection description
The collection (1921-[ongoing]) contains biographical information on members, bulletins and newsletters, financial reports, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, publications, scrapbooks, and materials documenting the origins of the Ames Rotary Club. Early records of the club include attendance reports, bulletins, correspondence, general meeting and Board of Directors meeting minutes, and two additional files related to the establishment and general history of the club. Documentation of the club's meetings and administration are pretty thorough. The materials contained in the Board of Directors meeting files can range in scope from including just meeting minutes to also including financial statements and officer reports. Bulletins include information on the club such as brief reports on club activities, synopses on presentations by invited speakers, and notices of upcoming events. Members of the Ames Rotary Club are also well documented. Two sets of biographical files contain in-depth information on dozens of club members and include biographical sketches, photographs, and newspaper clippings. Many members documented in these files were prominent members of the Ames and Iowa State communities such as Iowa State professors and administrators Thomas Agg, G. L. Bridger, Charles Friley, Tolbert MacRae, Louis Menze, Martin Mortensen, Raymond Pearson, Julian Schilletter, C. H. Stange and Ames businessmen and residents Chevalier Adams, D. L. Iverson, Seaman A. Knapp, Alfred H. Munn, Carl Ringgenberg, and Clark D. Tilden. Scrapbooks from the 1970s through the 1980s provide a complete review of the year's meetings and include identified photographs of the year's events. The collection also contains a small assortment of publications related to District 6000 (formerly District 600) and Rotary International. One publication in particular contains a brief history of most of the local clubs organized under District 6000 of Rotary International. |
