Historical note

On May 5, 1928, a meeting was called by the Grinnell Chapter of American Association of University Professors in connection with the annual meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science for the purpose of establishing a State Conference of American Association of University Professors Chapters. The suggestion first came from Dr. E.S. Allen, Iowa State College. It was voted to elect a chairman, secretary and three additional persons to constitute an executive committee who were instructed to arrange for a meeting the next year and to propose plans for a permanent state organization. Officers elected were Chairman E.S. Allen, Iowa State College; Secretary Henry S. Conrad, Grinnell College; and Committee H.M. Kelly, Cornell College; L.W. Smith, Drake; E.W. Bartow, State University of Iowa.

Collection description

The collection (1928-1979, undated) includes material from the Conference's inception in 1928 to 1979. No conference meetings were held during the war years of 1942-1943 although Chapters were active. A comprehensive historical background of the Iowa Conference may be found in the inventory on meetings, minutes, and correspondence, Boxes 4 and 5.

The appendix contains the names of those who were prominent in the organization of the Conference as well as in national American Association of University Professors and those outside whose contributions political or otherwise had been sought.

description:	This series contains meeting minutes from Iowa conferences, faculty rights including faculty grievances at Iowa colleges and universities. This series also contains development and organization of Iowa chapters includes correspondence, reports, and meeting minutes. Also included are financial records containing treasurer's reports, cancelled checks, accounts, bank statements, receipts, and correspondence. This series also contains lists of attendance, college faculties, mailing labels, memberships, and quarterly roster printouts. Newspaper clippings regarding the Iowa conferences are also included.
