John William Megown was born in New London, Missouri. Megown received his A.B. (1953) and his M.S. (1955) from the University of Missouri. From early 1955 until November of 1968, he was associated with several leading agri-business firms headquartered in Illinois. He joined the Vigortone Products Company (Division of Beatrice Foods Co.) Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in November of 1968. Megown was promoted to Vice President and Director of Communications (1970-1972), Vice President and Director of Marketing and Public Affairs (1972-1978), and finally Vice President for Public Affairs and Governmental Relations (1978-1980). He was also named to the Board of Directors (1972). In August of 1980, he became President of Megown and Associates, Marion, Iowa, and in September of 1980, he was named President of Possibilities, Incorporated, Davenport, Iowa. Megown served as President (1970-1971) of the National Feed Ingredients Association and was chairman of the Governor of Iowa's Agricultural Promotion Board for ten years. He served on two U.S. Department of Agriculture advisory committees, as a Trustee of the Livestock Merchandising Institute and as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Agri-Marketing magazine. He was also a commentator on WMT Radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. By 1980 Megown's "Food for Thought" radio shows were broadcast each week by over 700 radio stations in the U.S. and Canada and his "Speaking Out" shows aired on over 450 radio stations. He was widely recognized for his work. His awards include: Honorary American Famer Degree, National Future Farmers of America (1973); Best Public Relations Performance of the Year, Midwest Feed Manufacturers Association (1974); Iowa Farm Marketing Man of the Year, National Agri-Marketing Association (1975); Cedar Rapids Advertising Person of the Year, Cedar Rapids Advertising Federation (1977); Faculty Alumni Award, University of Missouri-Columbia (1978); Essential Ingredient Award, National Feed Ingredients Association (1978); Outstanding Service to Agriculture Award, Linn County Iowa Farm Bureau (1979); Honorary Chapter Farmer, Linn-Mar Future Farmers of America Chapter (1980). |
This collection (1961-1984, undated) contains articles, correspondence, honors and award information, radio addresses, speeches, and other files related to the agriculture industry. Several articles written by Megown regarding Trace Minerals in Nutrition are in the collection. Also included is information about awards, honors, recognitions, and special assignments received by Megown, including the "National Agri-Marketing, Iowa Farm Marketing Man of the Year" award and his appointment to the Iowa Agriculture Promotion Board. Information regarding his employment with Vigortone Products Company can be found in the collection, which includes advertisements, public relations and promotion programs, television commercials, and advertising awards. Megown was an active promoter of the agriculture industry and the collection contains many materials related to his efforts. Copies of many of his radio addresses, "Food for Thought" and "Speaking Out" can be found in the collection. These were weekly programs that usually discussed a relevant topic in agriculture. The collection also contains information regarding the Agriculture Promotion Movement, which consisted of several agricultural forums. Also included is information regarding Iowa Agriculture Day, including speeches, publicity, and newspaper articles. Other files contain Iowa Agriculture Promotion Board meeting minutes; publicity, correspondence and remarks from Nebraska Senator Carl T. Curtis; several speeches given by Megown regarding the support of Agriculture; and the "Nixon Cabinet Meeting" in Des Moines. |
