Historical note

The Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF) was officially established on December 27, 1918, based on a loosely organized Crop Improvement Association founded in 1912. The Women's Committee (also known as the Iowa Farm Bureau Women) was formally established in 1922. Its mission was to improve the standard of living for rural families by addressing social, cultural, educational, religious, and practical needs.

 

Collection description

This collection (1922-2006, n.d.) contains correspondence, handbooks (later called workbooks and then reference books), pamphlets, and conference materials documenting the committee's goals and activities, including suggested approaches to improving and participating at the county level in education, library development, legislation, health care, and food production.

Of special interest are records from the World War II era which illustrate the agricultural concerns of Iowans. On the whole, this collection documents the primary importance of rural life in Iowa during the latter half of the twentieth century.
