Biographical note

John Thomas (J.T.) Winborn was born December 1, 1887 in Nebraska. He married Mabel Schwimley (born July 17, 1886) on September 7, 1910. They farmed near Sharon Center, Iowa from the time of their marriage until September 1944 when they moved to Iowa City.

J.T. began farming at the time of the final illness of his step-grandfather, Primus F. Weeks. His grandmother, Emily Weeks, wrote to him at Cedar Falls, where he was pursuing a teaching degree at the State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa), asking that he come home and run her farm. He began working for her on June 9, 1909 at the rate of $35.00 per month. After their marriage, J. T. and Mabel lived on Emily Weeks' farm until 1915, when they bought the Marner farm a mile east and moved into the larger house on that property. In September 1944 they moved to Iowa City and reduced their involvement with the farm.

J.T. and Mabel had seven children: Everett, Lucille, Milton, Walter, Russel, Alice, and Ester. J.T. Winborn died in Iowa City in June, 1972, and Mabel in April, 1982.

Collection description

This collection (1909-1985) includes farm and business records and two manuscripts written by members of the Winborn family. The majority of the farm records are J.T. Winborn's ledgers from the time he began farming in 1909 until 1938, when he formed a partnership with his four older children (Everett, Lucille, Milton, and Walter).

Records are kept in cloth bound books and are mostly handwritten, but also include some original receipts from transactions such as feed and grain that Winborn bought or sold. The types of records kept in the ledgers includes: goods sold and bought (gasoline, livestock, feed), help and machinery hired, and a list of bills that the Winborns owed including truck repairs, veterinary and blacksmith bills.

Information about the Winborn family can be found in the two accounts at the end of the collection by J. T. and Mabel Winborn's daughter, Alice Winborn Thompson and J.T.'s younger brother, Louis A. Winborn.
