Entomologist and author. Hortense Butler Heywood, a native of Cherokee, Iowa, graduated from Lake Forest College with a B.A. (1903) in entomology and paleontology. Subsequent post-graduate work was completed at Chicago University (1904-1905); Berlin University, Germany (1906-1907); and Cornell University (1912-1914). She also worked as a schoolteacher (1910-1912) in Peterson, Iowa. Hortense married Rolland E. Heywood of Peterson, Iowa, in 1915, and they adopted a daughter, Julia Charlotte, in 1931. Hortense was the author of numerous historical articles about Iowa and American events as well as authoring scientific articles and collaborating with Dr. James Needham (Cornell University) on the book, Handbook of the Dragonflies of North America. Heywood was active in several scientific and community organizations, including the cause of women's suffrage, Sigma Xi, the Farm Bureau, the Red Cross, Civil Defense, the Iowa Federation of Women's Club, and the Webster City Women's Club. |
This collection (1894-1970, undated) contains biographical information, college papers, and course notes, photographs, correspondence, certificates, reports, articles, book reports, scientific correspondence and articles, reprint articles, and glass specimen slides. These papers document the varied life of Heywood and include articles, papers, and stories, many on international events and World War II, authored by her; and course notes and correspondence from fellow Cornell graduate students, Emmeline Moore and Alice Ayr Noyes. There is also scientific correspondence with her co-author, Needham, as well as illustrations, notes, and additional writings on dragonflies. The remainder of the collection contains science articles by peers and glass specimen slides of various insects. |
