Historical note

The Hog Cholera Eradication Committee consisted of several representatives from a wide-range of groups interested in eliminating the disease, including Iowa State Extension, the United States Department of Agriculture, Iowa State Veterinarian, Iowa Pork Producers, and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.

The group first met on March 4, 1960 and began a calculated program to eradicate hog cholera from Iowa and aid in preventing the spread of the disease throughout the country. They adopted a series of steps developed by the United States Livestock Sanitary Association as guidelines and continued meeting regularly until Iowa and the nation declared itself free of hog cholera in 1976.

 

Collection description

This collection contains correspondence, meeting minutes, drafts of legislative bills, membership lists, recommendations, news clippings, and other materials relating to the group’s effort to end the spread of hog cholera through education and legislation.
