Biographical note

Dorothea Bryan was born December 6, 1897 in Japan, where her parents were missionaries. She returned to the United States when she was in the seventh grade and lived in Wooster, Ohio. There she completed preparatory school at Wooster Academy and attended the College of Wooster for two years. She then transferred to The Ohio State University to complete her undergraduate degree. She married Iowa State College (University) professor John B. McClelland in 1923.

After she had moved to the United States, Mrs. McClelland became interested in reading Lafcadio Hearn's writings because they reminded her of Japan. Her interest in Hearn's books led her to a study of the biographies written about him. During her study, she found that there were good things about each biography, but there were also errors in each one. The materials in this collection were gathered in the course of her research. Dorothea McClelland donated these materials to the Department of Special Collections on July 19, 1993. She passed away in Virginia on August 10, 1995.

Collection description

The collection is arranged by type of material: artwork, greeting cards, magazines, maps, microfilm, news clippings in Japanese and in English regarding Lafcadio Hearn and Japanese life and culture, photographs, postcards, research notebooks, stenographer's notebooks, and travel brochures. The majority of the collection is made up of Mrs. McClelland's research notebooks. Her research notes were kept in subject order in three ring binders. These materials have been left in their original order, using Mrs. McClelland's labels as subject headings. Headings used appeared on labels on the spine of each binder. Where labels were missing, a heading has been supplied based on notebook content. Other items in this section were not in binders but were boxed together in subject groups.

Of particular interest is the notebook of letters between Mrs. McClelland and Lafcadio Hearn's son, Kazuo Koizumi. These materials can be found in files 10/3 to 10/10. Several stenographer's notebooks in Box 13 are generally concerned with a single Hearn-related topic, while some deal with specific research trips. Five of the notebooks are simply numbered, however, there are two numbered "III" and no number IV. There is also material on George M. Gould, a Philadelphia ophthalmologist, in files 7/6 to 7/12. Hearn stayed with Gould during the summer of 1889. Gould later wrote a book about Hearn, Concerning Lafcadio Hearn, published in Philadelphia by G. W. Jacobs & Company, 1908.
