Abstract

Engineer and statistician Eugene Lukacs was born (1906) in Hungary, and he grew up in Vienna, Austria. Lukacs worked as a secondary school teacher and actuary in Vienna through most of the 1930s. Being of Jewish ancestry, he left for the United States in 1939. Lukacs worked for most of his career at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D. C. (1955-1972). His interests included the theory of characteristic functions, characterization of distributions, robustness (stability) of characterization results, and functional equations. The collection contains biographical material, papers, correspondence, research, lecture notes, teaching materials, notebooks containing theorems and equations, and papers by other authors.

Biographical note

Eugene Lukacs was born on August 14, 1906 in Szombathely, Hungary, and he grew up in Vienna, Austria. He studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Vienna before transferring to the University of Vienna for a mathematics degree (1929). Lukacs furthered his education at the University of Vienna, earning a Ph.D. (1930) in mathematics. He received an actuarial degree (1931) the following year.

Lukacs worked as a secondary school teacher and actuary in Vienna through most of the 1930s. Being of Jewish ancestry, he left for the United States after German troops entered Austria (1939). After arriving in the United States, Lukacs held several teaching jobs before spending the bulk of his career at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. (1955-1972). He also taught at American University (1951-1957), and Bowling Green State University (1972-1975). At Bowling Green, he was named Distinguished University Professor (1973).

Lukacs' primary area of interest was in the theory of characteristic functions. He authored one of the first works on characteristic functions in English, his monograph Characteristic Functions (1960). He also published a second monograph on characteristic functions, Developments in Characteristics Function Theory (1983). His other research interests included characterization of distributions, robustness (stability) of characterization results, and functional equations.

Lukacs was elected a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (1957), the American Association for Advancement of Science (1958), and the American Statistical Association (1969). He was also a member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

Lukacs married Elizabeth Weisz, whom he met while at the University of Vienna. Lukacs died on December 21, 1987 in Washington, D.C.

Collection description

The collection (1899-1987, undated) contains biographical material, a selection of Lukacs’ papers, correspondence, research, lecture notes, teaching materials, notebooks containing theorems and equations, and papers by other authors. The bulk of his personal papers are from his time at Catholic University and Bowling Green State University, which include lecture notes and other teaching materials. The notebooks contain theorems and equations that were the basis of many articles he wrote. In addition to authoring numerous papers, Lukacs edited papers written by other researchers and in some cases, translated them from German or Russian to English. The articles relate to research and theory in statistics. The biographical material includes a diary, diplomas, certificates, news clippings and general biographical information.

Some of the material, such as the diary and early correspondence, is in German.
