Abstract

Iowa State graduate (1961) Merrill Oster founded numerous financial information service firms including Oster Communications, a financial publishing firm, and Oster Partners, a real estate development firm. Both are based in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Oster Communications, Inc. is an international company founded in 1969 which provides financial and futures market information to businesses worldwide. This collection contains files pertaining to Oster Communications, Inc. and its subsidiary companies owned by Merrill J. Oster. The collection contains business and personal files, such as reports, news clippings, meeting notes, correspondence, and speeches, which are arranged alphabetically with biographical information at the beginning. Companies and subsidiaries documented within the collection include Pinnacle Forum America and Practical Farmers of America. Materials documenting Merrill Oster's involvement in his community and local church are also included.

Historical note

International business journalist, publisher, author, public speaker and farmer Merrill James Oster was born on May 30, 1940 to Harland James and Perl Rosetta (Smith) Oster. He received his B.A. degree (1961) from Iowa State University in agricultural journalism and mass communication, his M.A. (1962) from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and his Ph.D. from the University of Phoenix in management and organization leadership. He has lived in Cedar Falls, Iowa; Scottsdale, Arizona; and Aurora, Illinois.

Oster founded numerous financial information service firms including Oster Communications, a financial publishing firm, and Oster Partners, a real estate development firm. Both are based in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Oster Communications, Inc. is an international company founded by Merrill J. Oster in 1969. Oster Communications, Inc. works to provide financial trading and futures information to businesses around the globe. The company publishes several magazines, including Futures and Commodities, as well as providing on-line news services to financial managers concerning international futures markets. Professional Farmers of America, Inc., a subsidiary of Oster Communications, Inc., provides a similar service for agribusinesses. Over the years, the company has grown in size to include several businesses acquired by Oster, growing Oster Communications to sixteen separate companies during the 1990s.

Oster also founded (1996) Pinnacle Forum America, a ministry for Christian leaders interested in cultural change. The forum focuses on changing American culture by helping leaders find their Christian purpose and desire to serve others. Pinnacle Forum sponsors local forums throughout the country for CEOs and community leaders who wish to share ideas and connect with ours on how to pursue personal spiritual growth and cultural change.

Oster has received many awards, including Iowa Entrepreneur of the year, Iowa State University's Outstanding Young Alumni Award (1975) and the James W. Schwartz Award, the highest award given to Iowa State University journalism alumni.

In addition to his business endeavors, Merrill Oster is involved in his community and local church. He has given numerous lectures on futures markets, finances, and personal, spiritual, and corporate development. He lived in Cedar Falls, Iowa for many years and currently (2012) resides in Aurora, Illinois and Arizona. Oster has authored many books including Giving Back and Vision Driven Leadership. He has held numerous leadership positions including Iowa State University Board of Governors, Campus Crusade for Christ, Iowa Young Presidents Organization, and World Presidents Organization. He was chairman of several committees for town improvement in Cedar Falls, with projects including the renovation of the Regent Theatre. He delivered several sermons at Downing Avenue Gospel Chapel, his home church, as well as other churches in the community. He and his wife Carol also support Campus Crusade for Christ and travel several times a year to visit with students and groups who are a part of the organization.

This collection (1971-2004, undated) contains the personal and business files of Merrill J. Oster, Oster Communications, Inc., and its subsidiaries. Personal files (Series 1) include his speeches and sermons delivered at various seminars, meetings, and events, correspondence, news clippings, notes and presentations (including slides) from seminars and events that he participated in, scholarship information, and several biographical sketches drafted about Merrill Oster. Business files (Series 2) include meeting minutes, memoranda, loan requests, event planning materials, correspondence, reports, and news clippings. Also included are several speeches delivered by Merrill Oster at various company functions as well as correspondence and planning materials for the 25th Anniversary celebration of Oster Communications, Inc.
