Biographical note

Karen L. Tonso received her B.S. (1972) in Geological Engineering from the Colorado School of Mines, her M.A. (1990) in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Colorado at Denver, and her Ph.D (1997) in Educational Foundations, Policy, and Practice from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

She was employed as an engineer with the Robert K. Morse Consulting Engineers (1972-1973) and Continental Oil Company (1973-1975); a Reservoir Engineer with the Marathon Oil Company (1975-1981) and a Senior Reservoir Engineer with the Central Bank of Denver (1981-1987). She then became a tutor, part-time instructor and adjunct professor with the following: Wheat Ridge High School (1988-1989); West High School (1990); Colorado Black Firefighters Association (1990); Cole Community College (1991); Metropolitan State College of Denver (1991-1992); University of Colorado at Boulder (1992-1994) and Professional Seminar III (1993-1996). She is currently a visiting faculty member at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Her research has focused on the impact of gender on women engineers and her dissertation is titled: Constructing Engineers Through Practice: Gendered Features of Learning and Identity Development.

 

Collection description

This collection contains unpublished articles, published articles and presentations and a dissertation.

The topics include the impact of gender on women in engineering; the experiences of women in the engineering classroom; and communication and teaching techniques.
