Historical note

The Iowa Association of Naturalists (IAN) is dedicated to the development of skills and education within the art of interpreting the natural and cultural environments. IAN began in 1976 with informal meetings, surveys, and newsletters shared with Iowans concerned about environmental education and conservation. The first official meeting of IAN was held at Camp Ewalu on February 4, 1978, and the first workshop was held the following June at the Swiss Valley Nature Center in Dubuque County. By-laws and articles of incorporation were completed in 1983 and approved in 1985.

The goals of IAN are promoted by the organization through a number of ways. Training workshops are held three times a year during the spring, summer, and fall. IAN publishes The Web, the organization’s newsletter, three times a year. The group also prints the EE Directory, a guide to the state’s environmental education programs. IAN sponsors training workshops for naturalist interns, the Junior Naturalists Program for children ages 6-12, and the Young Naturalists Camp for 5th and 6th graders. They also provide grants and scholarships to members and those looking to pursue a career in environmental education or related fields.

The collection (1976-[ongoing]) contains records related to the activities and administration of the Iowa Association of Naturalists. Included are copies of the IAN by-laws and articles of incorporation, correspondence, annual reports, meeting minutes, financial records, newsletters, publications, activity files, photographs, and other administrative records of the organization.
