Historical note

The Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) was formed in 1985 to "help Iowa farmers share information and experience about biological and low-cost farming techniques." The group was organized by Dick and Sharon Thompson, Larry Kallem, Richard Thompson, Michael Herman, Richard Voland, and Derrick Exner. The group is divided into five geographic districts, each with two representatives in addition to the executive vice-president and treasurer.

PFI's mission is to "research, develop, and promote profitable, ecologically sound, community-enhancing approaches to agriculture." The group is based out of two offices in Ames, Iowa. The executive director, membership coordinator, communications coordinator, and food systems program all work from an office in downtown Ames, while on-farm research and the farming systems coordinator work from the Iowa State University campus.
