Biographical note

Harry and Harriet Andrews were a husband and wife team of protein and dairy researchers who published works in the 1950s and 1960s. They worked for many years to promote the use of dry milk and educate the public and farmers about protein and using protein in dry milk form.

Harry Andrews was the executive director of the Protein Economics and Research Council which, as described by Andrews, was an "independent research and educational organization actively studying the basic agricultural and food problems with emphasis on marketing, including dairy product marketing."

Harriet Andrews received her B.A. in home economics and later received a master's degree. She was secretary-treasurer of the Protein Economics and Research Council and was co-owner of Protein Food Corp. which was located in Ames, Iowa. Harriet was also a member of the American Soybean Association.

Collection description

This collection (1951-1980, undated) contains the writings of Harry and Harriet Andrews which include news clippings, correspondence, manuscripts, brochures, reports, and pamphlets. Harriet Andrews' obituary is located in box 1, folder 1.

The majority of the writings were authored or co-authored by Harry Andrews who worked extensively with dairy protein while Harriet Andrews' writings focus on dry milk and other dairy products. Many of the manuscripts included are drafts of writings and are undated and untitled, and often without publication information. Also included is the newspaper column "Perky Says", which was a column authored by Harry Andrews geared towards educating children and several news clippings containing dry milk recipes submitted by Harriet Andrews.

Information on the Protein Economics and Research Council can be found in boxes 5 and 6, including correspondence about Khrushchev and the Protein and Economics Research Council.
