The Women, Food and Agriculture Network (WFAN) is an organization of women actively involved in and interested in sustainable agriculture. WFAN's website states their mission to be to "link and empower women to build food systems and communities that are healthy, just, sustainable, and that promote environmental integrity." The organization is centered in Iowa, but claims members from dozens of states and a number of countries from around the world. The origins of WFAN have their beginning with the Women, Food and Agricultural Working Group that was formed in 1993 by Denise O'Brien, an organic farmer from Iowa, and Kathy Lawrence, an advocate for sustainable agriculture from New York City, in preparation for the World Conference on Women in Beijing, China. Following the conference, O'Brien recognized the need for a network for women in agriculture and in 1997 WFAN was officially formed. O'Brien ran unsuccessfully for Iowa Secretary of Agriculture in 2006, but remains committed to advocating for sustainable agricultural practices in Iowa. |
