Historical note

The National Coalition for Family and Consumer Sciences Education was formed in 1977 by three professional organizations concerned with vocational home economics education: American Home Economics Association (AHEA), American Vocational Association (AVA) and Home Economics Education Association (HEEA). These associations have now changed their names to the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS), the Association for Career and Technical Education (ACTE) and the Family and Consumer Sciences Education Association (FCSEA).

With representatives from each organization, the purpose of the Coalition is to provide a unified voice and to communicate the purpose and importance of issues related to vocational home economics education to policy makers. Much of their work focuses on shaping state and federal policies and ensuring adequate funding for family and consumer sciences education at the national, state and local levels. The Coalition identifies existing and potential issues affecting members of the organizations it represents, facilitates communication among the organizations, and provides leadership to the organizations in creating policy or position statements. They work on drafting language for legislation, educating policymakers regarding Family and Consumer Sciences/human sciences education, and gathering data needed for formulating policies.

The Coalition has had several different names, including the National Coalition for Vocational Home Economics.

Collection description

The collection (1969-1999, n.d.) contains correspondence, reports, minutes, legislative testimony, vocational education statistics, notes and meeting materials. Much of the collection documents the coalition's efforts to ensure adequate funding and support for family and consumer science education at the federal level. There are also a number of records relating the Coalition's work advocating satisfactory funding and language within the Vocational Education Act, renamed The Carl D. Perkins Vocational Education Act in 1984 and the Carl D. Perkins Applied Technology Education Act in 1990, which funds secondary and post secondary vocational education. The collection also contains records from the organizations it represents (American Home Economics Association, American Vocational Association and the Home Economics Education Association).
