Biographical note

Sidney Alton Ewing was born on December 1, 1934 in Georgia. He received his B.S.A. (Bachelor of Science in Agriculture) and D.V.M. (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) degrees (1958) from the University of Georgia, an M.S. (1960) from the University of Wisconsin, and a Ph.D. (1964) from Oklahoma State University. In 1965, he joined the faculty at Mississippi State University, and in 1968, Ewing returned to Oklahoma State University to become the Head of the Veterinary Parasitology and Public Health Department. In 1972, he was named Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota. He returned to Oklahoma State in 1979, where he was the Wendell H. and Nellie G. Krull Endowed Professor of Veterinary Parasitology, Department of Pathobiology. He retired in 2003 and became an active Professor Emeritus of Oklahoma State University.

Throughout his career, Ewing focused on veterinary parasitology, and is internationally known for his research on parasites transmitted from ticks to dogs. In addition to his research on nematodes, hematoparasites, protozoans, trematodes, and ehrlichial and other tick-borne pathogens, Ewing has also researched the history of veterinary parasitology.

As a student employee of the U.S. Forestry Service in 1959, Ewing discovered a plant parasite that still bears his name, Tylenchorhynchus ewingii. In 1992, he discovered a second organism, erilichia ewingii, which causes canine granulocytic ehrlichiosis. He has published over one hundred and forty scientific publications, including journal articles, book chapters, and several books.

Ewing is the recipient of such awards as the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award, the Smith Kline Beecham Award for Research Excellence, the A.M. Mills award for Outstanding Contributions to veterinary medicine, and the Dedicatee for the 2008 Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases Meeting.

Collection description

This collection (1956-[ongoing]) contains biographical information, manuscripts, articles, correspondence, committee reports, meeting minutes, newsletters, and research and subject files documenting Ewing's research in the field of veterinary parasitology, canine disorders, and tick-borne diseases and pathogens. Most of the collection contains publications such as journal articles, conference papers, and manuscripts. Photographs of microscopic organisms accompany some of the manuscripts.
