Abstract

Madge Lula Clark was born on July 25, 1904 in Granger, Iowa. Her family moved to Lemmon, South Dakota in 1909. She married Hamilton Eugene Girard in 1925 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. They moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 1939 and then to Rolfe, Iowa where they operated a Super Value grocery store. The collection contains a copy of Madge's obituary and a photocopy of "Memories of Madge (Clark) Girard," a diary written by Madge. This diary includes reminiscences on her country school days in South Dakota, as well as information about the Girard and Clark family histories.

 

Biographical note

Madge Lula Clark was born on July 25, 1904 in Granger, Iowa. Her family moved to Lemmon, South Dakota in 1909, where Clark graduated from high school in 1923. She married Hamilton Eugene Girard in 1925 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. They moved to Des Moines, Iowa in 1939 and then to Rolfe, Iowa in 1943 where they managed a Super Value grocery store.

Madge and Hamilton had two children: Joe and Beverly. Madge's husband, Hamilton, died in 1951. Madge remained in Rolfe until 1997, when she moved to Humboldt, Iowa.

Madge died on September 28, 2000 at the Humboldt (Iowa) County Memorial Hospital.

 

Collection description

The collection (1972-2000) contains a copy of Madge's obituary and a photocopy of "Memories of Madge (Clark) Girard," a reminiscence written by Madge. In the reminiscence Madge describes her country school days in South Dakota, homesteading in South Dakota, church attendance, social activities, and information about the Girard and Clark family histories.
