Vera Rice was born in 1928 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. In 1938, her family fled to England following the Nazi occupation of her country. They later moved to Sydney, Australia, and it was there that Vera received her B.S. (1950) in biochemistry from Sydney University. That same year, Vera married Herbert A. David in London, remaining there for three years while her husband completed his doctorate in statistics while she worked as a biochemist. The Davids moved to the United States in 1957. She enrolled at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and received her M.A. (1970) in communications. In 1972, her husband accepted the position of Head of the Statistics Department and Director of the Statistical Laboratory at Iowa State University (1972-1984). During this time, Mrs. David worked for WOI-TV, the Iowa State Department of Health, and as technical editor for the Ames Laboratory of the Department of Energy. She was instrumental in organizing many department-wide functions and instituting the Statistics Winter Party. Often, the Davids opened their home to various faculty and students, particularly those from other countries. She was also active in Amnesty International and the Ames Jewish Congregation. Vera David died in 1991. In her memory, the Vera David Fellowship was established to provide support to an outstanding female graduate student in statistics. |
