Whiterock Conservancy is an Iowa nonprofit land trust which focuses on land management, environmental conservation, outdoor recreation activities, sustainable agriculture, conservation, recreation and environmental education, and stewardship of the Roswell and Elizabeth Garst Farmstead Historic District. Located near Coon Rapids, the property encompasses seven miles along the Middle Raccoon River and is focused on biodiversity and sustainability. Situated along its 5,000 adjoining acres are prairie, wetland, woodland, oak savannah and riparian zones. Whiterock Conservancy offers a variety of outdoor activities to help people reconnect with the outdoors and learn about Iowa's landscape. Recreational activities include fishing, hiking, bird watching, volleyball, horseshoes, and croquet. Other activities include workshops, tours, the Khrushchev History Talk, and hay rides. Accommodations are available as well, consisting of bed-and-breakfast style lodges and cottages. The land is also used as a laboratory to find solutions to the challenges facing rural Iowa such as declines in soil health and a lack of perennial land cover. Serving as an advocate for the Middle Raccoon River, the Conservancy works to improve the Middle Raccoon River Watershed's health. |
