Abstract

The Western Veterinary Conference was established in 1928 as the Intermountain Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA). The purpose of the organization is to annually sponsor the Western States Veterinary Conference. The conference provides a common meeting ground for veterinarian continuing education in all areas of veterinary medicine. This collection (1958-[ongoing]) contains incorporation documents, a constitution, by-laws, meeting programs, minutes, agendas, correspondence, reports, conference literature, conference statistics, photographs, conference papers, financial records, guidelines, press releases, newsletters, evaluation summaries, audio of program sessions, exhibitor directories, and women’s auxiliary material.

Historical note

The Western Veterinary Conference was established in 1928 as the Intermountain Veterinary Medical Association (IVMA). The IVMA's first president was H. J. Frederick from Logan, Utah. The sole purpose of the Intermountain Veterinary Medical Association was to annually sponsor the Western States Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas. The conference provided, as the Western Veterinary Conference does today, a common meeting ground for continuing education for veterinarians in all areas of veterinary medicine. The association's name was changed in 1987 to the Western Veterinary Conference in order to more accurately reflect the association's purpose, as well as its national and international membership and attendance. 1987 also marked the opening of the organization's first central office in Las Vegas, and the incorporation of the association in the State of Nevada.

Throughout its years, the Western Veterinary Conference has included conference sessions, workshops, seminars, commercial exhibits, allied group meetings, alumni receptions, colloquiums, autotutorials, and a women's/spouse's auxiliary. The conference includes a business meeting in which committee and officer reports are given, new Board members are introduced and items of importance to members is discussed. The WVC has had numerous committees throughout the years including Audit, Awards and Honors, Budget, Conference, Resolutions, Past-Presidents, Program, Spouses Activities, Financial Review, Research and Education, and Nominating. The conference hosted a Women's Auxiliary for many years, which included a Board of Directors. The Auxiliary was later expanded and renamed Spouses' Activities and the Spouses' Program.

Collection description

This collection (1958-[ongoing]) contains incorporation documents, a constitution, by-laws, meeting programs, minutes, agendas, correspondence, reports, conference literature, conference statistics, photographs, conference papers, financial records, guidelines, press releases, newsletters, evaluation summaries, audio of program sessions, exhibitor directories, and women's auxiliary material.

Reports are often found in a separate folder, but occasionally are with the Board of Directors materials. Conference literature often contains seminar schedules, brief program timetables, a listing of autotutorial programs available at the conference, blank forms, event tickets, conference promotional material, the exhibitors' directory, and the women's auxiliary program. Selected papers from the conference were published beginning around 1987 and continued for about ten years. Biographical information on speakers can be found for a few select years within the collection. Other biographical information can be found within the Nominating Committee materials for nominees and officer candidates.
